Work Practice Controls

(admin) if employees can be removed from exposure to the potential hazard by changing the way they do their jobs then the hazard can be eliminated with a work practice control.

5,000 lb. minimum for 6 ft. fall Protect from swing or impact hazards

Steady noise limits

85 decibels for an 8-hour shift is considered hazardous noise exposure.

Shade protection

Cutting torches are 3-5. Welding is around 11 and could be as high as 14 (cutting and welding operations)

Long term respirator use

If in scenario where work with item with high PPM for 8 hour TWA such as spray painting or sandblasting, amount exposure to when painting, fumes clog the respirator overtime. So they should use a respirator with an airline that pumps in fresh O2 if they are going to be painting/sand blasting all day.

Engineering Controls

If: the machine or work environment can be physically changed to prevent employee exposure to the potential hazard, then the hazard can be eliminated with an engineering control

NRR for hearing protection

OSHA derates the NRR by one-half for all types of hearing protectors

face shield

Protect the face from nuisance dusts and potential splashes or sprays of hazardous liquids; Do not protect employees from impact hazards

Qualitative Fit Test

a pass/fail test to assess the adequacy of respirator fit that relies on the individual's response to the test agent

Anchorage

a secure point of attachment for lifelines, lanyards or deceleration devices, and which is independent of the means of supporting or suspending the employee.

Respirator requirements

eye protection for corrosive materials

daily fit testing

Qualitative fit testing does not measure the actual amount of leakage. Whether the respirator passes or fails the test is based simply on you detecting leakage of the test substance into your facepiece. There are four qualitative fit test methods accepted by OSHA: a. Isoamyl acetate, which smells like bananas; b. Saccharin, which leaves a sweet taste in your mouth; c. Bitrex, which leaves a bitter taste in your mouth; and d. Irritant smoke, which can cause coughing. i. Quantitative fit testing uses a machine to measure the actual amount of leakage into the facepiece and does not rely upon your sense of taste, smell, or irritation in order to detect leakage.

Quantitative Fit Test

an assessment of the adequacy of respirator fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage into the respirator.

Oxygen Deficiency

atmosphere has an oxygen content below 0.5% by volume. Normal 20.9 % OSHA 19.5 % considered oxygen deficient

Fall arrest prote

either active or passive, is defined as a means of preventing workers from experiencing disastrous falls from elevations.

Harness

Safety Spectacles

i. Made with metal/plastic safety frames ii. Most operations require side shields iii. Used for moderate impact from particles produced by such jobs as carpentry, woodworking, grinding, and scaling

Employee PPE

Hearing protection requirements

i. Should be comfortable ii. Must fit properly iii. Must be kept clean (hygiene) iv. Must be of appropriate rating

Employer responsibilities

i. Use all feasible engineering and work practice controls to eliminate and reduce hazards ii. Then use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if these controls do not eliminate the hazards. iii. PPE is the last level of control

Retractable lifeline device

portable, self-contained devices fixed to an anchorage point above the work area. At the moment of fall centrifugal locking mechanism is activated to arrest the movement reducing potential for free-fall (6. to 300 ft.) 3,000 lbs. rating
