Work Practice Controls

(admin) if employees can be removed from exposure to the potential hazard by changing the way they do their jobs then the hazard can be eliminated with a work practice control.

Viton

(glove type) highly resistant to permeation by chlorinated and aromatic solvents

Lanyard

short, flexible, strap, or webbing connecting worker's harness to anchor (rated for 5,000 lbs); Retractable lifelines require 3,000 lbs. rating

Metal insoles

used in safety shoes to protect against puncture wounds

Drop line

vertical lifeline (5,000 lbs.) that extends from independent anchorage and to which a lanyard is attached to a grabbing device

Nitrile

(glove type) provides protection against a wide variety of solvents, harsh chemicals, fats and petroleum products and also provides excellent resistance to cuts, snags, punctures and abrasions. i. Hirner likes these gloves because they are strong and good for a wide variety. ii. Pretty good gloves across the board for chemicals and protection.

Butyl

(glove type) provides the highest permeation resistance to gas or water vapors; frequently used for Ketons and esters

Norfoil laminate

(glove type) resists permeation and breakthrough by an array of toxic/hazardous chemicals

Anchorage Points

5,000 lb. minimum for 6 ft. fall Protect from swing or impact hazards

Steady noise limits

85 decibels for an 8-hour shift is considered hazardous noise exposure.

Shade protection

Cutting torches are 3-5. Welding is around 11 and could be as high as 14 (cutting and welding operations)

Long term respirator use

If in scenario where work with item with high PPM for 8 hour TWA such as spray painting or sandblasting, amount exposure to when painting, fumes clog the respirator overtime. So they should use a respirator with an airline that pumps in fresh O2 if they are going to be painting/sand blasting all day.

Engineering Controls

If: the machine or work environment can be physically changed to prevent employee exposure to the potential hazard, then the hazard can be eliminated with an engineering control

NRR for hearing protection

OSHA derates the NRR by one-half for all types of hearing protectors

face shield

Protect the face from nuisance dusts and potential splashes or sprays of hazardous liquids; Do not protect employees from impact hazards

Qualitative Fit Test

a pass/fail test to assess the adequacy of respirator fit that relies on the individual's response to the test agent

Anchorage

a secure point of attachment for lifelines, lanyards or deceleration devices, and which is independent of the means of supporting or suspending the employee.

Respirator requirements

a. Must have escape model on respirators with O2 deficient environment and cant use airline hose as escape. b. Figure 7-10 "Suggested outline for selecting respiratory devices" i. Positive Pressure SCBA (H) ii. Positive Pressure Combination Airline and Auxiliary SCBA (H)

eye protection for corrosive materials

a. Ordinary safety glasses provide some protection, but chemical safety googles are best. b. In some cases, you should also wear a face shield (with safety glasses or goggles) to protect your face from splashes. The current CSA Standard Z94.3, "Eye and Face Protectors," provides advice on selection and use of eye and face protectors

payment of PPE

a. When PPE is required to protect employees it must be provided by the employer at no cost to employees except for specific items such as i. Safety-toe footwear, prescription safety eyewear, everyday clothing and weather related gear, and logging boots

daily fit testing

a. rely on Manufacturer's instructions for proper use and information regarding respirator and PPE. b. Employer must provide 2 different respirator types for the employee to choose from. (And giving the employee 2 respirators and the only difference is the size does NOT count. From OSHA.gov i. There are two types of fit tests: qualitative and quantitative. 1. Qualitative fit testing is a pass/fail test method that uses your sense of taste or smell, or your reaction to an irritant in order to detect leakage into the respirator facepiece. Qualitative fit testing does not measure the actual amount of leakage. Whether the respirator passes or fails the test is based simply on you detecting leakage of the test substance into your facepiece. There are four qualitative fit test methods accepted by OSHA: a. Isoamyl acetate, which smells like bananas; b. Saccharin, which leaves a sweet taste in your mouth; c. Bitrex, which leaves a bitter taste in your mouth; and d. Irritant smoke, which can cause coughing. i. Quantitative fit testing uses a machine to measure the actual amount of leakage into the facepiece and does not rely upon your sense of taste, smell, or irritation in order to detect leakage.

Quantitative Fit Test

an assessment of the adequacy of respirator fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage into the respirator.

Oxygen Deficiency

atmosphere has an oxygen content below 0.5% by volume. Normal 20.9 % OSHA 19.5 % considered oxygen deficient

Fall arrest prote

either active or passive, is defined as a means of preventing workers from experiencing disastrous falls from elevations.

Harness

encompasses torso and are attached to other parts of fall arrest system. (typically nylon or polyester webbing) (rating 5,000 lbs.)

causes of eye injuries

i. Dust and other flying particles, such as metal shavings or sawdust ii. Molten metal that might splash iii. Acids and other caustic liquid chemicals that might splash iv. Blood and other potentially infectious body fluids that might splash, spray, or splatter v. Intense light such as that created by welding and lasers

excessive noise factors

i. How loud is the noise as measured in decibels (dBA)? ii. What is the duration of each employee's exposure to noise? iii. Do employees move between separate work areas with different noise levels? iv. Is noise generated from one source or multiple sources

Safety Spectacles

i. Made with metal/plastic safety frames ii. Most operations require side shields iii. Used for moderate impact from particles produced by such jobs as carpentry, woodworking, grinding, and scaling

Employee PPE

i. Safety-toe footwear, ii. Prescription safety eyewear, iii. Everyday clothing and weather-related gear, and iv. Logging boots

Hearing protection requirements

i. Should be comfortable ii. Must fit properly iii. Must be kept clean (hygiene) iv. Must be of appropriate rating

Employer responsibilities

i. Use all feasible engineering and work practice controls to eliminate and reduce hazards ii. Then use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if these controls do not eliminate the hazards. iii. PPE is the last level of control

Retractable lifeline device

portable, self-contained devices fixed to an anchorage point above the work area. At the moment of fall centrifugal locking mechanism is activated to arrest the movement reducing potential for free-fall (6. to 300 ft.) 3,000 lbs. rating
