Principles of Composition
Asymmetrical Balance
Both sides are different, but they achieve a balance through the interaction of opposing design elements
Harmony
Bringing order to chaos by grouping objects by one of the elements. (repetition)
Principles of Composition
Harmony, Unity, Balance, Contrast, Proportions/Size, Emphasis/Focus
Balance
an arrangement of design elements that create a feeling of equilibrium or stability
Unity
complex interplay of all the principles; the composition of a stage setting should bring unity to the overall arrangements of the visual forms.
Rhythm
created by visual movement that repeats at a certain interval or creates a cycle
Emphasis/Focus
directing the audience's attention to a particular place
Symmetrical Balance
if you split a design down the center; each side would be a mirror image
Contrast
the juxtaposition of dissimilar design elements in counter-point with the harmony of the dominant visual themes
Scale
the relationship of objects in terms of proportion
Proportion
the relative size/scale of objects compared to a reference or each other
