Gospel of John

Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring[a] would come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained through angels by a mediator. 20 Now a mediator involves more than one party; but God is one. 21 Is the law then opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could make alive, then righteousness would indeed come through the law. 22 But the scripture has imprisoned all things under the power of sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ[b] might be given to those who believe. 23 Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring,[c] heirs according to the promise.

-Gal 3:19-29 -According to Paul, the law is good because it kept everyone in line before Christ. -v. 24--> law was a disciplinarian (pedagagos)--> means teacher/instructor, has some good, but its good is limited -Paul will never say law is bad, just that it has a limited function that ends once someone enters faith w/ Christ -v. 27-28--> baptismal formula; all are one in Christ Jesus (absolutely nothing to do with equality, arguing how the world is divided and fundamentally changed) Once we are in Christ, divisions don't matter. Just those that are justified in faith in Christ and those that are not.

"You were running well; who prevented you from obeying the truth? Such persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough. I am confident about you in the Lord that you will not think otherwise. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty. 11 But my friends,[a] why am I still being persecuted if I am still preaching circumcision? -Galatians 5:7-12 -Paul identifies two things that are important for the church 1. If you let any heresy in, entire thing will be corrupted 2if you have made it that circumcision is what Christians have to do, then you are making belief that Christ's death on the cross and resurrection are unimportant

"For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes[a] it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father."

-John 10:17-18 -one of the first allusions to crucifixion. Continues rehabilitation of Jesus' image -crucifixion isn't something that happens to Jesus, its something Jesus chooses for himself. Shows how much power and control Jesus has. -only gospel of john has jesus lay down his own life like that

"Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life.[a] Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" 27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah,[b] the Son of God, the one coming into the world."

-John 11:23-27 -Matha's confession--> realized eschatology -Part of Lazarus story, he is dead for 4 days and Jesus brings him back to life. Jesus says "I am the resurrection and the life" -Jesus can bring Lazarus back and also end his own life. Annoys people because people are now following Jesus.

'When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him,[a] God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

-John 13:31-35 -crucifixion=glorification -from this point forward, John's gospel will emphasize love and obedience (love means loyalty in this context)

-John 14:6-14 -most famous I AM statement of Jesus -Christ, I will do whatever you ask in my name -divine authorization: if you follow Christ, you will receive divine faith (cause everything God did was authorized)

"If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If you belonged to the world,[a] the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world—therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, 'Servants[b] are not greater than their master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. -John 15:18-27 -if the world hates you, that's good because you love God and God loves you. Dichotomy set up with Good on one side and world on the other. If you pick God's side, world will hate you and do you harm, this brings you closer to god. -v.26--> The "advocate" is one of the functions of the Holy Spirit. John says Advocate=royal advisor (kind of like the opposite of Satan) - gospel of Luke is the only one that lineates Holy Spirit

"After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all people,[a] to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. 6 "I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. -John 18:1-11 -Jesus about to get arrested and tortured, Peter injures one of his killers, Jesus heals this man and gets mad at peter for hurting him -high christology--> Christ being described as being more like God--> Jesus strong and courageous in mark and John

"And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son,[a] full of grace and truth."

-John 1:14 -distinctive Christian formulation -word becoming flesh; once pure good/truth gets mixed with human flesh, it is destroyed. -Jesus is in fact the revelation of the Father. In the person of Jesus, you're seen God himself. John is the only gospel that says so.

What evidence does gospel give that shows that it was a physical human that resurrected?

My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him."

-John 2:1-11 -wedding feast at Cana only in John, God is involved in mundane things/petty tasks -turning water into wine

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. 20 For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. 21 But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God."

-John 3:16-21 -Realized Eschatology v. 18-18 -John says the end time is settled right here, right now -John has most exclusive claims on Christian membership because of his high Christology (must be absolutely loyal to Christ, if you fail to be, you will be condemned. God was sent to this world for the world's benefit. if we reject this benefit, we will be condemned.

19 The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you[a] say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us." 26 Jesus said to her, "I am he,[b] the one who is speaking to you."

-John 4:19-26 -Samaritan vs Jewish tension--> distinction between these no longer applies, all that matters now is your allegiance with Christ -to worship someone is to submit to that person's authority

"Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47 But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?"

-John 5:45-47 -interpretive strategies of the early Christians -Christ and God one in the same, how early church understood literature -john 5= holy trinity all the same -Jesus arguing "if you understand the torah, everything Moses said was about me. Everything that was once thought to be sacred and Jewish is actually about Jesus."

"Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." "Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."

-John 6: 35, 41 -'I am' statements (ONLY in gospel of John) -gloss interpretive comments -feeding of 5000 men associated with Jesus as bread of life/heaven -Roman officials feel threatened by Jesus when he does this because he can take care of these men food wise. If he can take care of them, why do people need the Romans?

"When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?" 61 But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, "Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But among you there are some who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. 65 And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father." 66 Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. 67 So Jesus asked the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?" 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."[a] 70 Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil." 71 He was speaking of Judas son of Simon Iscariot,[b] for he, though one of the twelve, was going to betray him."

-John 6:60-71 -Peter's confession -confession in John: no messianic secret (aspect of Jesus' identity that is supposed to be a secret(in all other three)), no betrayal, No keys for Peter. Peter blessed in Matthew -John's confession of Peter is intended to show how Jesus is different and more exalted than in other gospels

Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

-Phillippians 2:5-11 -Paul taking an existing hymn and folding it into his letter (existing psalm/poem) -serve as encouragement for people, how could Christ falling in the worst possible way be a comfort? Part of why suffering is beneficial is because it allows you to experience what Christ did -suffering sets up exaltation -if you are to lose everything for Christ then you will gain everything that Christ gained

"They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing[a] what Abraham did, 40 but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are indeed doing what your father does." They said to him, "We are not illegitimate children; we have one father, God himself." 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word. 44 You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is from God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear them is that you are not from God." 48 The Jews answered him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" 49 Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the judge."

-John 8:39-50 -Abraham is a patriarch of the Jews. Argument between Jesus and Abraham. -all jews who are speaking, their father is the devil and they are choosing him. -Jesus identifying entire group of ppl belonging to devil no middle ground for John's gospel, so everything is binary, you either are of God or you're not. -jews label is more global here than it is in synoptics -parting of the ways

Philemon

-Letter written to an individual who is the head of a church in his house. -Should Christians own slaves? Should Christians be slaves? -Onesimus: Slave who met Paul while both in prison. He becomes Christian by Paul's teachings. Paul writes letter to Philemon saying he should no longer be a slave. -v. 17-21--> Philemon most quoted text over whether slavery was lawful or unlawful

Corinth

-Like Vegas, place where everyone went to go wild -large cosmopolitan city -lots of travelers came in and out -prostitution capital -Issues arising in Corinth -Married man sleeping w/ mother in law -visiting prostitutes -dissent among congregants (using one another) -disorderly serivces -questions about resurrection

"Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah[a] is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses[b] of these things. 49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

-Luke 24:44-49 -Jesus' final instructions -Luke's Christology: Fulfillment of prophets and psalms--> not seperate of Jewish faith -Luke's ecclesiology--> church centered in Jerusalem but is universal -repentance--> to change one's mindset

"You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified! 2 The only thing I want to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Spirit by doing the works of the law or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? Having started with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh? 4 Did you experience so much for nothing?—if it really was for nothing. 5 Well then, does God[a] supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?"

-Most acerbic (pissed off) tone -Paul's ministry being contested--> rise of rivals -Paul wants to know why the believe any gospel that walks by

Philippians

-Paul wrote these letters from prison, may contain several letters (Polycorp)--> follows standard epistle form

Acts 2-5

-Pentacost: demonstrates Luke's universality and inclusiveness. Enabling the Holy Spirit makes it possible. From this point on, nothing will happen unless Holy Spirit authorizes it -God reversing Tower of Babel (from OT) in Acts. God unifying people from when he once scattered them. -Luke trying to distance himself from modern Jews. -Pattern in Luke/Acts--> major characters will always give sermons that summarize the gospel. Same pattern in DtrH- argued that its done on purpose. -pairing od repentance/baptism

Acts 10-11

-Peter has vision of shit coming down from heaven with unclean animals. God says to eat them and to not say something he has made is unclean. Symbolizes that Gentiles should be let into the church (Gentles used to be seen as unclean, Jews as clean). -

even though I, too, have reason for confidence in the flesh. Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit 44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46 for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" 48 So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

Soteriology

John 1:12-13 -study/doctrine of salvation -first place in gospel where we see "if you believe in God you are saved" -faith becomes important -to believe is to trust oneself in something. For the ancients, faith/belief was something tangible. (Ex. for ancient world, sitting in a chair is entrusting faith in the chair)

2 Cor
