Established after the Reign of Terror / National Convention; a five man group as the executive branch of the country; incompetent and corrupt, only lasted for 4 years.

Jacobins

Radical republicans during the French Revolution. They were led by Maximilien Robespierre from 1793 to 1794.

Committee of Public Safety

A committee established during the French revolution to identify enemies of the republic. It accomplished this by having anyone suspected crimes against the state arrested and executed.

Guillotine

A machine for beheading people, used as a means of execution during the French Revolution.

Robespierre

Leader of the Committee of Public Safety; chief architect of the Reign of Terror. Shot int he mouth (possibly self-inflicted) and executed with the Guillotine.

Reign of Terror (1793-1794)

Ten-month period of brutal repression when some 40,000 individuals were executed as enemies of the French Revolution.
