A smoke detector may NOT be placed if

1. Temperature is below 32 degrees 2. Temperature is above 100 degrees 3. Relative humidity is above 93% 4. Air velocity is greater then 1.5 m/sec (300ft/min)

The purpose of fire alarms

1.Provide notification 2. Alert occupants 3. Sunmon aid 4. Control fire safety functions

Alarm Log Book

A Log noting alarm activity. Completed by FSD and buildings not requiring FSD someone who has proper C of F. Retained for a period of 3 years

Smoke Detector Maintenance Book

A Log noting time, date, and technician for a buildings maintenance. Completed by FSD or S-78 holder. Lists total number of smoke detectors and locations.

Combination Detector

A device that responds to more then one of the fire conditions or employs more then one operating system to sense these conditions

Nuisance Alarm

A fire alarm signal caused by malfunction or improper operation of a fire alarm system or component.

Initiating device

A system component that originates transmission of a change-of-state condition, such as in a smoke detector, manual fire alarm box, or supervisory switch.

Spot-Type Detector

A type of detection device that provides coverage in a specific area where the sensing element is in a fixed location.

Unwarranted Alarm

An alarm aignal transmitted by a system wich failed to function as designed as a result of improper installation or maintenance.

Central station

An off-premises facility that monitors alarm systems and is responsible for notifying the fire department of an alarm. These facilities may be geographically located some distance from the protected building(s).

When are smoke detectors tested?

Annually, once per year

Photoelectric Detectors

Best type of detector for smokey fire by using a beam of light

When are smoke detectors cleaned?

Every 6 months

When are smoke detectors calibrated?

If a Detector is 0.25% outside the listed sesnsitivity range

Plastic Smoke Detector Cover

Placed on or over fire detection device to protect them from construction operations, but removed immediately upon completion of each work shift

Addressable Smoke Detector

Provides an alarm indication to a control unit and location

Intelligent Smoke Detector

Provides location of alarm and environmental change information

Plenum

The area above the ceiling tile or below the subfloor in a building.

Projected Beam-Type Detector

This device is equivalent to a row of spot-type Detectors for level and sloping applications

Air-duct Smoke Detector

This device uses a sampling tube to tests air quality for visible smoke or invisible combustion products. Sampling cannot exceed 120 seconds

Multi-Sensor Detector

This sensor is capable of generating MULTIPLE alarm signals from any of the sensors either independently or in combination

Multi-criteria Detector

This sensor is capable of generating only ONE alarm sigbal fron the sensors either independently or in combination

When are detectors tested for sensitivity?

Within one year after installation

Ionization Detector

Type of smoke detector that uses a small amount of radioactive material to make the air within a sensing chamber conduct electricity.

Alarm Verification

Used to reduce the number of unwarranted alarm. Cannot delay the alarm longer than 60 seconds

Light Obscurration Detector

Uses a beam of light to detect. When the beam is interrupted by smoke particles the sensor trips

Light Scattering Detector

Uses an indirect beam of light to detect. When smoke comes into contact with beam the light is scattered and redirected to the sensor

How are most detectors cleaned?

Vaccum or small brush unless specified otherwise
