Science ESG- Loss of Biodiversity
Describe three ways that preserving biodiversity can come into conflict with human interests.
1. We wont be able to build on new land 2. Some people may lose income when land uses are restricted 3. People may object when their interests are placed below those of another species
Why do biologists favor using an ecosystem approach to preserve biodiversity?
Biologists favor using an ecosystem approach to preserve biodiversity because emphasizing the preservation of entire ecosystems will save many unknown species from extinction
Explain the ESA
Endangered Species Act; the primary legislation, enacted in 1973, for protecting biodiversity in the United States
Propose a way in which hunting or harvesting of plants or animals by humans can actually increase or protect biodiversity. Explain how it would help and what results could occur.
Hunting animals can actually increase or protect biodiversity by killing the animal that is a predator to a prey that is endangered. The prey's species should then increase in its population.
List and explain the human causes for the loss of biodiversity.
The human causes for the loss of biodiversity are polllution, human population growth, and habitat destruction. Pollution can have serious effect on species by affecting the water that some live in or some use for a food source. Population growth can affect them by tearing down habitats for homes for people or using them for resources. Human population can coincide with habitat destruction.
Explain how the loss of a predator from a small island will affect not only the population of the prey species, but also of the other species in that ecosystem.
The loss of a predator from a small island will affect not only the populatiion of the prey species but also of the other species in that ecosystem because since the prey species will most likely be increased, their prey's species will decrease. Other preys to the main predator might also increase in their population.
