Culture of Servant Leadership

A culture of servant leadership is marked by the empowerment of all people. Servant leader led organizations or groups inspire all members to grow and achieve. Servant leaders are not threatened by the growth or achievement of others because they understand the benefits and potential to achieve is improved when everyone is improving their capacity.

How is a servant leader different?

A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the "top of the pyramid," servant leadership is different. The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first, and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.

Foundations of Servant Leadership

Leadership philosophy first proposed by Robert Greenleaf in his 1970 essay, "The Servant as Leader." He asserts that servant leaders have a natural inclination to serve first, and such a conscious choice makes them aspire to lead. This is in sharp contrast to the traditional top-down leaders who aspire to lead in an effort to acquire power, status or material possessions.
