10-word sentences are too choppy, 35-word sentences are too demanding. Hit the sweet spot, average of 15-20 words per sentence.

Why are readers critical of passive voice?

Emphasizes the Action. Because we don't emphasize the person responsible for the action, the action itself becomes more important in the reader's mind. In fact, often when using the passive voice, we leave out the subject altogether
