Deaths Rates
A list of all patients who died during their hospital stay *Death Rates should be low, usually < 1

An amount before anything is subtracted. It includes all deaths, NO exclusions

Any single, separate, systemic process upon or within the body that can be complete in itself.
What figures are used to calculate death rates
Discharge figures
Institutional Death Rate
The total number of inpatient deaths minus the number of deaths that occurred less that 48 hours after admission for a given period of time divided by the total number of inpatient discharges minus the deaths that occurred less than 48 hours after admission for the same period.
NB Death Rate
Total # NB deaths/ Total # NB discharges
Gross Death Rate Formula
Total # deaths for a period/ Total # of discharges (including deaths) for a period
Net Death Rate Formula
Total IP deaths - those < 48 hrs/ Total discharges - deaths < 48 hrs *NB are included in both numerator and denominator
Anesthesia Death Rate Formula
Total deaths by anesthesia/ Total number of anesthesias administered X 100
Postoperative Death Rate Formula
Total surgical deaths within 10 days/ Total patients operated on X 100
