Substitution Method-Steps

A method of solving a system of equations when you solve one equation for a variable, substitute that expression into the other equation and solve, and then use the value of that variable to find the value of the other variable. Step 1 Choose one equation and solve for x or y. Step 2 Substitute the expression from that equation into the other equation and solve. Step 3 Substitute the value found in step 2 back into the equation solved step one.

A method of solving systems of equations where you put both equations in standard form, add or subtract the equations to eliminate a variable and solve for the variable left, and then use that number to find the value of the other variable. Steps: 1. Target one variable for elimination 2. Multiply one (or both) of the equations so that targeted variables are opposites. Then, rewrite the new system. 3. Add the two equations and write the resulting sum. (You should only have one variable left.) 4. Solve for the remaining variable. 5.
