Metephor

a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

Oxymoron

a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction

Pun

a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings.

iambic pentameter

a line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short (or unstressed) syllable followed by one long (or stressed) syllable

double entendre

a word or phrase open to two interpretations, one of which is usually risqué or indecent.

soliloguy

an act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play.

Allusion

an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.

Hyperbole

exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.

malapropism

the unintentional misuse of a word by confusion with one that sounds similar

rhyming couplet

two lines of the same length that rhyme and complete one thought

blank verse

verse without rhyme, especially that which uses iambic pentameter.

verse

writing arranged with a metrical rhythm, typically having a rhyme

Prose

written or spoken language in its ordinary form, without metrical structure.
