The cell circle
Nucleolus
Found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes, which move out of the nucleus and take positions on the rough endoplasmic reticulum where they are critical in protein synthesis.
Golgi Apparatus
A membrane-bound structure with a single membrane. Actually a stack of membrane-bound vesicles that are important in packaging macromolecules for transport elsewhere in the cell.
Vesicles
small membrane sacs that specialize in moving products into, out of, and within a cell
Mitochondrion
cell organelle that breaks down lipids and carbohydrates and releases energy
Vacuole
cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
The portion of the endoplasmic reticulum that contains attached ribosomes
Centrosome
Also called microtubule organizing center(MTOC); an area in the cell where micro tubules are produced.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
An endomembrane system where lipids are synthesized, calcium levels are regulated, and toxic substances are broken down.
Centrioles
One of two tiny structures located in the cytoplasm of animal cells near the nuclear envelope; play a role in cell division.
Nucleus
The center of the atom which contains the protons and neutrons; in cells, structure that contains the cell's genetic material (DNA) and controls the cell's activities.
cell membrane
a cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell
Lysosome
filled with enzymes to breakdown dead cell parts and foreign objects; only found in animal cells. White blood cells that eat bacteria, lysosome contents are carefully released into the vacuole around the bacteria and serve to kill and digest those bacterias.
peroxisomes
generate and degrade H2O2 in performing various metabolic functions transfer hydrogen from various substrates to oxygen and they produce H2O2. Use O to break fatty acids(lipids) that can be sent to mitochondria.
Chloroplast
organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy
ribosomes
small particle in the cell on which proteins are assembled; made of RNA and protein
cell wall
strong wall outside a plant cell's plasma membrane that protects the cell and maintains its shape
cell shape
the main function of the cell walls to provide support and protection for the cell's (muscles)
