The Nervous System (EMT Level)
What does the parietal lobe control?
integrates sensory information
superficial to deep, what are the structures of the brain?
lobes, cerebellum, white matter tracts, and brainstem
What is the peripheral nervous system?
nerves the branch from the CNS and innervate the rest of the body
What does the frontal lobe control?
personality and motor function
What does the hypothalamus control?
regulate body temperature and other things
What is the basal ganglia?
releases many of the chemicals the neurons use to communicate
What is the sympathetic nervous system?
responsible for fight or flight
What is the reticular activating system?
series of white matter tracts that interconnect various parts, a network of nerves that connect the different pathways in the brainstem, and spinal cord
What does the temporal lobe control?
speech and memory
What are the two subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system?
sympathetic system and parasympathetic system
What does white matter do?
the "highways" of the brain, connect parts of the brain and are vital for consciousness
What is the autonomic nervous system?
the "unconscious" system, controlling the function of most organs and vital bodily processes
during stress what happens to the autonomic nervous system?
the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) overrides the parasympathetic (rest and digest) system
What does the occipital lobe control?
visual stimuli
what are the two subdivisions of the peripheral nervous system?
autonomic and somatic
What does the central nervous system consist of?
brain and spinal cord
What does the brain stem control?
breathing, heart rate, blood pressure
what are the two divisions of the nervous system?
central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
What is the somatic nervous system?
commonly called the "skeletal/muscular" system, as it is responsible of the control of all voluntary movement
what are the three things the central nervous system is responsible for?
consciousness, major interpreting of stimuli from sensory organs, and coordinating hormonal responses to stimuli (fight and flight)
What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
decreases energy use and prioritizes digestion, so it is called the "rest and digest" response
What does the cerebellum control?
fine motor movements and balance
What are the four lobes of the brain?
frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal
