What happened in Gnaddenhutten Ohio?

A terrible massacre happened in Gnaddenhutten on the Tuscawaras River. David Zeisberger was involved. He taught many of the Deleware Indians about Christianity. He belonged to a sect from Europe called Moravia. They believed war was wrong. The young minister converted many Deleware Indians to his religion. They lived in peace and refused to fight the Americans. This did not matter to the American colonists. They burned most of the Moravian villages to the ground. At Gnaddenhutten, they met 150 peaceful Indians. They killed all the Indians without mercy. Only two little boys escaped.

An ordinance is another name for law. This law divided Ohio in townships. Each township was six miles square, and divided into 36 sections. Each section contained 640 acres.

The Battle of Fallen Timbers is important because if the American Colonists didn't win, then we might not have been here today, as Americans. It all started like this. Anthony Wayne marched his men from Cincinatti to Maumee river. The warriors of Little Turtle, Tarhe the Crane, and BlueJacket were hiding there behind fallen trees that a tornado had knocked down. The fight beetween the 2 armys became known as The Battle of Fallen Timbers. After only 1 hour of fighting, the Indians ran from the battlefield because they knew they couldn't win. The Americans celebrated because now, Ohio could be open for settlement.

Explain why the Northwest Ordinance was important.

The Northwest Ordinance was important because it could make land become a state! All the land north of the Ohio River and west to the Missisippi River was called the Northwest Territory. Ohio was part of this territory. Parts of the territory would become states in three stages. First, a governor and 3 judges would run the territory. Then, when 5,000 free men lived there, the territory could set up a legislature. When 60,000 people lived in the territory, it could become a state.

The Treaty of Greeneville was important because this this settled that the Indians could make peace with the Americans. It all started like this. A year after the Battle of Fallen Timbers, Anthony Wayne met with the leaders and other men of the Ohio tribes at Fort Greeneville. Tarhe the Crane urged the Indians to make peace with the Americans. Little Turtle watched as each tribal leader walked up and signed the treaty. When it was his turn, he walked up. He signed it. Then he stopped, looked at Wayne, and said, "I am the last to sign it, and I will be the last to break it." Little Turtle kept his word. There was peace in Ohio for the next 16 years.

They told the ambassadors to go back to Washington with this warning: "Great Father, do not cross the Ohio River with your soldiers! It will run red with the blood of your young men!"
