Topic is 1 word and the subject of the text and theme is a sentence and the message or lesson the character learns.

1. Must be the message, life lesson, or moral of the story. What the character learns during the story 2. Full complete sentence 3. Non-specific. No character names, not mention of the text, no details from the text 4. Universal- can applied to multiple life situations
