*Speed limit signs have the maximum allowed speed posted on them*. There are many factors that go into setting speed limits in a city or town. Some of them are: -how well intersecting traffic can see cross traffic, -whether or not hills and curves are present, and -the number of cars that are present at a given intersection. Other factors may include -the number of accidents that have happened on a particular road, -the chance of pedestrians crossing the road, and -the likelihood of animals crossing the street.

Regulatory signs tell you of laws and regulations that apply at a specific location. They are black or red on a white background. Failure to obey these signs is a traffic violation. Examples of regulatory signs include SPEED LIMIT, STOP, YIELD, WRONG WAY /DO NOT ENTER, ONE WAY, lane control signs, prohibited signs, and passing signs. The following signs are examples of the most common regulatory signs that you will encounter as you drive.

Yield

indicates that you are approaching a joining road ahead. Slow down or stop if needed to yield the right-of-way to vehicles coming from the other road. Approach the intersection cautiously and be prepared to stop. Remember, regulatory signs inform and instruct as to what can and cannot be done. These signs are not optional. Failure to follow regulatory signs is highly dangerous and can have huge legal ramifications.
