Maximum posted SPEED LIMIT

*Speed limit signs have the maximum allowed speed posted on them*. There are many factors that go into setting speed limits in a city or town. Some of them are: -how well intersecting traffic can see cross traffic, -whether or not hills and curves are present, and -the number of cars that are present at a given intersection. Other factors may include -the number of accidents that have happened on a particular road, -the chance of pedestrians crossing the road, and -the likelihood of animals crossing the street.

Road markings

*Yellow lines* indicate that traffic on the other side of the lines is traveling in the opposite direction. - *White lines* indicate that traffic on the other side of the lines is traveling in the same direction or marks the edge of the road. White is also used for stop limit lines and crosswalks. -*Solid lines* indicate that you cannot cross them under normal circumstances. -*Dashed or dotted lines* indicate you can cross over them to change lanes or pass another vehicle if it is safe. Smaller dots that are closer together indicate that the lane will become a merge-only lane soon.

At a 4-way-stop, the driver on the ________ must yield the right of way to the driver on the________

At a 4-WAY stop, the vehicle at a complete stop has the right-of-way. In other words, the first person to arrive at the intersection has the right-of-way. If two vehicles arrive at the four-way stop simultaneously, the vehicle on the *left* must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the *right*. --> right goes first

Services Signs

Blue and white signs that inform you of relevant services ahead such as fuel stations, rest stops, hotels, hospitals, and police stations

Recreation/Scenic

Brown and white signs that inform you of public areas such as recreation areas, points of interest, trails, historical information, and scenic routes

Exit Signs

Have arrows indicating which lane to use for a particular destination. A white arrow on a green background indicates that you MAY either exit or continue straight in that lane. A black on yellow arrow (warning sign colors) indicate that you MUST exit if you are in that lane.

Informational Signs

Informational Signs These signs provide drivers with information such as directions to highways, rest areas, scenic areas, hospitals, etc. The shape of these signs is usually rectangular. The color scheme is normally white on a blue, green, or brown background.

Construction Zone Signs

Most of the signs are self-explanatory and should be simple to recognize on sight. As you can see, many of these signs are the same as regular warning signs, but are orange to indicate a work zone and they are temporary. Whenever these signs are present, they supercede the regular signs and lane markings on the road.

Regulatory Signs

Regulatory signs tell you of laws and regulations that apply at a specific location. They are black or red on a white background. Failure to obey these signs is a traffic violation. Examples of regulatory signs include SPEED LIMIT, STOP, YIELD, WRONG WAY /DO NOT ENTER, ONE WAY, lane control signs, prohibited signs, and passing signs. The following signs are examples of the most common regulatory signs that you will encounter as you drive.

Reversible lanes & lane signals

Reversible lanes are painted with double yellow broken lines that must not be crossed except at designated times.

Directional/Guide Signs

These signs are green and white and they inform you of on which road you are traveling, and how to reach an intended destination. Some route signs, such as those indicating a state or U.S. highway, will have a different color scheme. For instance, interstate highway signs are a blue and red shield with white lettering.

pecial warning signs provide mandatory requirements for speed and caution when you are entering a school area.

These signs may be yellow (or fluorescent yellow green) and black, orange and black, or red and white. The new yellow green signs are easier to see in low visibility conditions such as dusk, rain, or fog.

INFORMATIONAL

These signs provide drivers with information, such as directions to highways, rest areas, scenic areas, hospitals, etc. The shape of these signs is usually rectangular. The color scheme is normally white on a blue, brown, or green background.

REGULATORY

These signs regulate traffic by telling drivers what they can and cannot do. They are generally square or rectangular in shape. The color scheme will always be some combination of black, white and/or red.

WARNING

These signs warn drivers of road conditions ahead and often require drivers to slow down. The shape is usually a diamond but there are exceptions. Colors include black on yellow, black on orange for construction zones, and the new black on fluorescent yellow-green for school zones. Fluorescent yellow green is visible from a much greater distance, especially in low visibility conditions and will phase in as the prevalent color for warning signs.

These signs warn you of temporary conditions that override permanently posted signage. It is important to pay close attention when you are driving in construction zones for your safety as well as the safety of those working to improve the roadways.

Triangular shaped reflective sign on the back of slow-moving vehicle

These vehicles are not usually on the road for a long time, so consider whether or not passing is really necessary before doing so. Whether it is a farm tractor, horse-drawn carriage, construction vehicle or some other type of slow-moving vehicle, other drivers are required to reduce their speed and follow at a safe distance.
