Transformations & Polygons
How much do the three angles in a triangle sum up to (total if added together)?
180
congruent angles:
2 angles of equal value
Complementary angles:
2 angles whose sum equals 90
Supplementary angles:
2 angles whose sum is 180
How much do the angles of a quadrilateral (4 sided shape) sum up to (total if added):
360
dilation:
A transformation that enlarges or shrinks in size a 2D shape by a given factor. A factor of 2x would double the size of a shape. A factor of 1/3x would reduce the size of the shape to a third its original size. All angles are maintained and lengths of sides are scaled.
reflection:
A transformation that takes a 2D shape and creates a mirror image of it across a line of reflection (or mirror)
rotation:
A transformation which requires taking a 2D shape and rotating its position around a fixed point. The point can be a vertice of the shape or any other point on the cartesian plane.
Isoceles triangle:
A triangle with 2 sides of equal length and 2 angles of equal degrees
Scalene triangle:
A triangle with no equal sides nor any equal angles
Right angle:
An angle of 90 degrees
Transformation:
An applied change to the size, position or orientation of a 2D shape. There are 4 types of transformations (reflections, rotations, slides (translations), and dilations)
True or false, a regular polygon is a polygon with all equal sides but not necessarily all equal angles.
False
True or false. A translation line tells us.....the direction and length of the image.
False
True or false, a quadrilateral with 3 angles summing 233 degrees, must have a 4th angle equalling 36 degrees.
False, x = 127 degrees (360 - 233 =127)
True or false. A quadrilateral with 3 angles totalling 262 degrees, must have a 4th angle of 102 degrees.
False, x = 98 degrees (360 - 262 = 98)
True or false. A translation line tells us.....the shape the translated image will be.
False.
True or false. A translation line tells us....the size and direction of the image.
False.
translation:
Slide. Moving the 2D shape in a single direction for a given length. Does not involve rotating or reflecting. Object orientation stays the same, it is simply moved.
True or false? A triangle with 2 angles totalling 90 degrees, has a 3rd angle of 90 degrees.
True. All triangles have angles which sum up to 180 degrees.
An equilateral triangle
a triangle with 3 equal angles (60 degrees) and 3 sides of equal lengths
obtuse angle:
an angle which is larger than 90 degrees
acute angle:
an angle which is smaller than 90 degrees
True or false, a regular polygon is a polygon with all equal angles but not necessarily all equal sides.
false
Slide:
translation
True or false if 3 angles in a quadrilateral add up to 285, the missing angle must equal 75 degrees
true
True or false, a quadrilateral with 3 angles totalling 243 degrees has a 4th angle of 117 degrees
true
True or false, a regular polygon is a polygon with both all equal sides and all equal angles.
true
True or false. A translation line tells us.....the length and direction of the slide
true
