a few things to remember...
-transgender people are people -don't ask/say things to trans people that you wouldn't say to cisgender people -a person's transgender identity might not be primary focus of every situation and interaction

transgender
a person who identifies as anything other than the gender they were assigned at birth
cisgender
a person who is not transgender -a person whose gender identity matches the one they were assigned at birth
transman
a transgender person who identifies as a man
transwoman
a transgender person who identifies as a woman
gender non conformity
anyone who does not express their gender in a way that is typically expected for someone of their sex/gender
transition
changing a person's bodily appearance through hormones, surgery, or other procedures, so that the person's appearance is more congruent with their gender identity
genderqueer
said by people who don't identify with other gender labels
agender
term used by people who have no inner sense of their gender identity, or that they have no gender
non binary
umbrella term for anyone whose gender identity doesn't fit within the gender binary (not male or female)
gender confirming/affirming surgery
used to be known as "sex change" or "sex-gender reassignment surgery"
