Tumbling Test 1
What is a good example of a positive way to make instructional feedback during a lesson?
"keep yourself curled when you go through the forward roll sequence"
Describe each of the different teaching styles discussed in class and provide an example.
1. Direct Style - This is when the teacher provides the instructions and demonstration to the whole group. This style is often used when there are safety concerns because there is only one correct way to do the skill/activity. (Ex. Gymnastics) 2. Practice Style - This style engages both the learners and teacher to make decisions. It allows for practice time, individual feedback, and incorporating the importance of demonstration. 3. Reciprocal Style (Cooperative Learning) - This style includes partnerships between students (doer and observer). The observer has a checklist and observes the doer. The teacher only speaks with the observer. This is an effective way to get everyone involved. (Ex. Shooting a basketball) 4. Self Check Style - This style teaches students to grade and evaluate themselves. They are given a criteria sheet that allows them to check themselves as they progress. (Ex. Jumping rope) 5. Inclusion Style - This teaching style is INCLUSIVE of ALL ability levels. It provides a successful learning environment allowing students to begin at whatever level they can perform and slowly increase in difficulty as they progress. (Ex. Gymnastics) 6. Guided Discovery/Problem Solving - This teaching style allows children to think on their own to learn a skill (Ex. Obstacle Course) 7. Free Exploration - This teaching styles allows students natural curiosity to take over to learn a specific skill or use of equipment without demonstration (Ex. different ways to throw a ball)
What are the four components of a PE lesson plan? (Include characteristics and appropriate timing for each)
1. Introductory Activity -2 to 3 minutes -gets students moving as soon as they enter the gym -transition from traditional classroom to activity based class -large muscle involvement -pro tip: incorporate aspect of focus of the lesson in introductory activity (Ex. Knockout basketball game) 2. Fitness/Wellness -6 to 8 minutes -showcases fitness as a lifelong activity and how it can be used outside the classroom (Ex. AB exercises like crunches) 3. Lesson Focus -15 to 25 minutes -main part of the day's lesson -students practice a specific skill and get feedback (Ex. how to shoot a basketball) 4. Closing Activity/Game - approximately 5 minutes - low organized game -can be removed if you run out of time -cooling off period before going back to regular class - pro-tip: relate to lesson focus (Ex. freeze tag)
What are the 5 NASPE Content Standards? (Provide two observable outcomes for each)
1. Movement - students demonstrate movement and motor skills at competent levels (such as locomotor skills like walking and skipping or gymnastic skills) 2. Knowledge - students demonstrate knowledge of strategies, content, and activities in a variety of settings (such as using correct vocabulary or the importance of warm ups and cooling down) 3. Health - students understand the lifelong benefits of physical activity and want to maintain a healthy lifestyle (such as willing to try new activities and skills or participation in health and wellness activities outside of PE class) 4. Respect - students exhibit responsible behaviors and show respect for self and others during physical activity (such as respecting own limitations and abilities as well as cooperating with peers) 5. Value - Students understand the value of physical activity in their lives (such as understanding health and wellness decision making and consequences associated with fitness choices)

Why is physical activity important for children? Explain.
It is important for children to experience a variety of physical activity starting at a young age for a myriad of reasons. First, young children are at the best age to learn essential motor skills they will use for the rest of their life. Second, active children often become active adults which creates a path for a lifelong healthy lifestyle. Lastly, physical activity provides an opportunity to socialize with peers and establish values.
