Saddle Joint

Formed between the bones who articulating surfaces both have CONCAVE AND CONVEX REGIONS. The surface on one bone fits into the complimentary surface of the other; such as a rider sitting on a saddle.

Hinge Joint

The CONVEX SURFACE of one bone fits into the CONCAVE SURFACE of another. Structure resembles a door hinge. Structure permits movement in only one plane.

The cylindrical surface of one bone rotates within a ring formed of bone and fibrous tissue of a ligament. Movement is limited to rotation around the central axis.

Condyloid Joint

The oval-shaped condyle of one bone fits into the elliptical cavity of another bone. Permits movements in different planes; rotation is not possible.

Gliding Joint

Articulating surfaces are NEARLY FLAT or SLIGHTLY CURVED. Structures allow for GLIDING/SLIDING back and forth twisting movements.
