Types of Synovial Joints with pictures
Examples of Gliding Joints
Carpals, Tarsals, Verteral facets ,sacroiliac, etc
Example of Saddle Joint
Carpometacarpal joint of the thumb
Ball-and-socket Joint
Consists of bone with a globular or slightly egg-shaped head that articulates with a cup-shaped cavity of another bone. Structure permits movements in all directions, as well as rotational movements around a central axis
Saddle Joint
Formed between the bones who articulating surfaces both have CONCAVE AND CONVEX REGIONS. The surface on one bone fits into the complimentary surface of the other; such as a rider sitting on a saddle.
Example of Condyloid Joints
Metacarpophlangeal Joints.
Hinge Joint
The CONVEX SURFACE of one bone fits into the CONCAVE SURFACE of another. Structure resembles a door hinge. Structure permits movement in only one plane.
Pivot Joint
The cylindrical surface of one bone rotates within a ring formed of bone and fibrous tissue of a ligament. Movement is limited to rotation around the central axis.
Condyloid Joint
The oval-shaped condyle of one bone fits into the elliptical cavity of another bone. Permits movements in different planes; rotation is not possible.
Gliding Joint
Articulating surfaces are NEARLY FLAT or SLIGHTLY CURVED. Structures allow for GLIDING/SLIDING back and forth twisting movements.
