Normal Distribution

A distribution which is bell shaped and symmetrical about the mean

Skewed

A distribution which is not symmetrical about the mean.

Cluster

A group of scores which are close together compared with other scores.

Standard Deviation

A measure of spread about the mean

Outlier

A score which is a significant distance from other scores. Special consideration needs to be given to this score as it may bias conclusions.

Range

The difference between the highest score and the lowest score

Mode

The most common score

Interquartile Range

The range of the middle 50% of scores

Mean

The sum of all scores divided by the number of scores

Median

The value which has and equal number of observations greater than itself and less than itself

Categorial

data that is non numerical: favorite flower or different varieties of nuts

Quantitiative

data that is numerical: average number of times flown in an airplane or total number of paper reams sold

Ordinal

ordered, categorial data: 2 most popular brands of paper ream sold

Continuous

quantitative data that can have any value: individual weights of mangoes in stock

Discrete

quantitative data with distinct values: number of mangos in stock

Nominal

unordered, categorial data: brands of paper reams out of stock
