Unit 2 Lesson 1: How Does Earth Rotate and Revolve in Space?
Earth's tilt
23.5 degrees. Earth is always tilted in the same direction nd because of this we have the seasons.
Constellation
A group of stars that form a pattern in the night sky. They seem to move across the sky during the night because the Earth rotates, and they appear in different positions in different seasons because of Earth's orbit.
Sun
A ball of hot glowing gasses called a star.
Hemisphere
Half of a sphere. The Earth is divided into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
1 Day
How long does it take for earth to make one full rotation?
Earth's Rotation
The Earth spins on its axis from West to East. It takes 24 hours to make 1 complete rotation.
revolve
The circles represent Earth moving around the Sun as the moon moves around Earth.
orbit
The circular path an object takes around another (revolution).
year
The time it takes a planet to revolve around the Sun once. Earth takes 365 days.
day
The time it takes a planet to spin once on its axis.
season
The weather at a certain time of year. It changes because the direction of Earth's tilt and its orbit around the Sun. The seasons are opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
rotate
To spin on an axis take one day; 24 hours; night and day.
axis
the imaginary line that Earth rotates around. It goes from the North Pole to the South Pole
