When solving an equation, why do we use the inverse operation to both sides of the equation?

We have to do the same thing on both sides of the equation, and we do the inverse/opposite to cancel the number out on the side with the variable.

Joy added 24 new contacts to her phone. She now has a total of 100. Let c represent the number of contacts Joy had on her phone before she updated it. Write an equation and solve for c.

c + 24 = 100 c = 76
