* No one (not even government) can take away human rights - doesn't matter what you are or who you are not rights are to be taken from you - rights depend on each other

* are fundamental rights and freedoms that all people (just have to be human) * government have the responsibility to ensure and protect certain rights for their people * main focus: How government treats people and to make sure the government is responsible for protecting individuals from abuses by others
What are the two basic categories of human rights?
* civil and political = property, fair trial, and right to vote * social, cultural and economical = access to food, water and shelter
