AAP Statement (American Academy of Pediatrics)

"Child Life services should be considered an essential component of quality pediatric health care and are integral to family-centered care and best-practice models of health care delivery for children"

Play and developmentally appropriate communication are used to

(1) promote optimal development (2) educate children and families about health conditions (3) prepare children and partner with families for medical events or procedures (4) plan and rehearse useful coping and pain-management strategies with patients and families (5) help children work through feelings about past or impending experiences (6) partner with families to establish therapeutic relationships between patients, siblings, and caregivers

Certified Child Life specialist professional standards of practice

-minimum of a bachelor's degree or master's with specific in human growth and development, family studies, psych, other fields -up to 600 hours of experience -certification examination -professional development hours to maintain certification

Goals of Child Life

-play and other forms of communication become tools to help reduce stress and enable patients and families in coping with the health care experience -focuses on the psychosocial aspect of hospitalization -interventions are targeted to express childhood reactions to healthcare events

Evaluation in APIE

-the evaluation of the intervention, was it successful or not, the plan for the future -documentation, putting the intervention to objective terms when communicating the child life intervention/goals to the rest of the healthcare team
