- Essential medicines are those that satisfy priority health care needs of population - Equity in health depends on access to essential/high quality/affordable medical technologies - Increasing access to medical products is central to achievement of universal health coverage such as malaria/HIV
What is universal health coverage about?
- Goal is to ensure that all people obtain health services needed without paying for them, preventing ill health leading to poverty - Requires strong/efficient/well-run health system, system for financing health services, access to essential medicines/technologies
What is an example of WHO leadership priority 6?
- Goals integrate many aspects of their work, particularly building resilient health systems/effective health institutions for sustainable and equitable health outcomes, to ensure no one is left behind - Assisting countries in providing health care/health promoting resources such as clean water and sanitation
What is health-related sustainable development goals?
- Health is focus of SDG 3, but is relevant to other 16 goals - SDG's build on achievements of MDG's but are broader, deeper/far more ambitious
What is international health regulations (2005)?
- IHR are legal tool agreed to by 196 countries across globe - Aim to help international community prevent/respond to public health risks that have potential to cross borders/threaten people worldwide - IHR require countries to report certain disease outbreaks/public health events to WHO
What is noncommunicable diseases?
- Rise of noncommunicable diseases has devastating health consequences for individuals, families/communities, threatens to overwhelm health systems - Dealing with these conditions is vital to ensure sustainable health care - 4 non-communicable diseases are part of focus of this agenda; CVD, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases
What is social, economic/environmental determinants?
- To improve people's health outcomes/increase healthy life expectancy requires action across range of determinants that contribute to ill health/health inequity

- WHO developed 'Model List' which is guide for development of national essential medicine lists

- WHO play leadership role in coordinating response to health issues including sending health workers/providing medication
