Always get permission before securing from the circuit. The station requests permission to secure from that circuit control station (Bridge, Main Control, DCC); the bridge acknowledges the transmission and asks the station to standby. The bridge talker gets permission from the OOD for the phone talker to secure. The bridge phone talker informs the station of the permission to secure. The station acknowledges it and secures the station Then stow communication device appropriately

To learn if telephone stations are manned and ready after sustaining battle damage, it is necessary to conduct a circuit check. Conduct a phone check of all stations. When making the phone check, the control station says, "All Stations - Control. Phone check." Each talker then acknowledges in the ship's assigned order. If a station does not acknowledge within a few seconds, then proceed to the next. The non-responding station, if still functional, responds at the end of the check.
