Provides the principal means of communications for damage control operations. The handset circuits are sound-powered circuits; the transmitter of a sound-powered telephone transforms sound waves into electrical energy. The receiver transforms this electrical energy back into corresponding sound waves.

102.3.1 Explain the basic operation of the sound powered telephone

The ship's general announcing system (1MC) is a one-way transmitting system heard throughout the ship and used to pass information to the ship's crew on a daily basis (also a means of damage control communication used to pass information to the entire the ship)

102.3.5 Explain the basic operation of the ships general announcing

Used for general communications, as well as damage control communications when the telephones are installed at or near repair party lockers.

102.3.7 Explain the basic operation of the ships service telephone

•Transmit official messages only. •Depress the transmitter button only when transmitting. •Use only standard words and phrases. •Do not use slang or profanity on the phone. •Use correct nautical terms. •Never interrupt another station unless you need to pass an emergency message. •If you must interrupt a station on the circuit, use the phrase, "Silence on the line." Phone talkers are an important link in the interior communications chain; that chain is no stronger than its weakest link. •Unauthorized talking means the chain has at least two weak links. •Be professional. •Never show impatience, anger, or excitement. You must talk slowly, clearly, and precisely. Circuit discipline means self-discipline.

102.4 Rules for circuit discipline (how to talk on phone/radio)

1) Name of station you are calling. 2) Name of station you are calling from. 3) State the message EX. DC Central - Repair 2; investigators away

102.5 State the three parts of a message on the radio (how do you hail someone?)

Acknowledge a message as soon as you receive and understand it. Repeat it to the sender word for word. Do not use "aye" to answer "yes" to a question; instead, use "affirmative" or some other appropriate reply. Likewise, use "negative" to answer "no." EX. DC Central; investigators away, affirmative

102.6 Explain the proper way to acknowledge a message

The on-duty phone talker must request permission to change phone talkers to be relieved by another phone talker. To exchange a set of faulty phones for a good set, the phone talker must request permission to change phones DC Central - Repair 2; Request permission to switch phone talkers. Repair 2 - DC Central; Affirmative. All Stations - Repair 2; Temporarily going off line to switch phone talkers. (SWITCH PHONE TALKERS) All Stations - Repair 2; Back online.

102.7 Explain Procedures for temporarily leaving the circuit/relieving the phone talker

Always get permission before securing from the circuit. The station requests permission to secure from that circuit control station (Bridge, Main Control, DCC); the bridge acknowledges the transmission and asks the station to standby. The bridge talker gets permission from the OOD for the phone talker to secure. The bridge phone talker informs the station of the permission to secure. The station acknowledges it and secures the station Then stow communication device appropriately

102.8 Explain the procedures for securing from phone talking and storing sound powered phones

To learn if telephone stations are manned and ready after sustaining battle damage, it is necessary to conduct a circuit check. Conduct a phone check of all stations. When making the phone check, the control station says, "All Stations - Control. Phone check." Each talker then acknowledges in the ship's assigned order. If a station does not acknowledge within a few seconds, then proceed to the next. The non-responding station, if still functional, responds at the end of the check. Complete when every station has answered and all equipment faults have been corrected.

102.9 Explain procedure for checking sound-powered phone
