Moderates freed many of the Jacobins' prisoners, neutralized the power of the Committee for Public Safety, and had many of Robespierre's friends killed.

Why did Robespierre think the Terror was necessary to achieve the goals of the revolution?
Robespierre wanted to wipe out the Old Regime, so he condemned twenty thousand to the guillotine. Reign of Terror was the only way to wipe out Old Regime and re-educate people.
What changes occurred in France because of the French Revolution?
The old social order was dislodged, the monarchy was overthrown and the church was brought under state control. Nationalism spread.
