Explain how ancient Greek architecture impacted that produced in ancient Rome.

MY ANSWER: Ancient Greek architecture impacted that later produced in ancient Rome heavily, as showcased in the Parthenon. The Parthenon showed that the Romans wanted architecture with balance and appeal to the eye. In ancient Rome, it was not just the Parthenon that was influenced by ancient Greece. Rome also adopted Greek support columns; Ionic, Doric and Corinthian. They improved upon the accomplishments made in ancient Greek by signifying an arch at the top, adding to the elaborate effects of their architecture. Generally though, they barely altered much more than what the Greeks accomplished. CORRECT ANSWER: The Romans used architecture from Greece as a model, particularly the architectural orders: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.

Discuss how New York City has changed to accommodate the significant growth in the last two centuries. Explore the skyscrapers, open areas, and structures meant to make transportation possible.

MY ANSWER: New York City has changed to accommodate the significant growth in their population over the last two centuries by continually seeking new ways for people to live and/or comfortably there, especially when it comes to the issue of traffic. In the mid 1800s, New York City had a population of 500,00. But by 2006, there were 8,250,567 people residing in the city! This dramatic increase lead to a need for skyscrapers, high-rise buildings, mass transportation, and man-made natural areas. Natural areas included Central Park, which was intended to provide a natural and open place of tranquil space. Skyscrapers were built to give the city's population places to live in. And structures of interest -- like William Van Allen's Chrysler building -- were made. Skyscrapers, open areas, and structures all coexist to make transportation into the city or from one part to another a little bit easier. Skyscrapers provide a residence to live and make a home in, usually in areas where there is plenty available to do, leaving less people on vehicles. Open areas provide a place for people to go to to enjoy themselves, typically free of charge. And lastly, structures can give a city's population something to observe, admire and appreciate. CORRECT ANSWER: The Brooklyn Bridge was built to make transportation across the East River possible for vehicles and pedestrians, the skyscrapers were built (making New York City the vertical city) to accommodate for the population growth, and Central Park was created to provide open space.
