A & P
Name 3 types of membranes.
1. Cutaneous (covers the surface) 2. Mucous (lines cavities open to exterior) 3. Serous (moist membranes in closed body cavities)
What are the three serous cavities in the body?
1. peritoneal cavity (surrounding abdominal organs) 2. pleural cavity (surrounding the lungs) 3. pericardial cavity (surrounding the heart)
What is always necessary for there to be a concentration gradient across a cell membrane?
A pump in the cell membrane, powered by ATP.
What are the serous membranes?
Serous membranes line and enclose the serous cavities, where the excrete lubricating fluids.
What cell membrane pump is "critical for life"?
The sodium-potassium pump. If not for this pump, potassium would leak out of the cell and it would die.
What is the difference between the visceral and parietal pericardium?
visceral pericardium: lines heart parietal pericardium: surrounds the visceral pericardium
What is the difference between the visceral and parietal peritoneum?
visceral peritoneum: lines abdominal organs parietal peritoneum: lines abdominal wall
What is the difference between the visceral and parietal pleura?
visceral pleura: lines lungs parietal pleura: lines thoracic wall
