What is the ¨second Darwinian revolution¨ & why is it significant?

The application of Darwinian principles to psychology. Evolutionary psychologist ask what over time had caused certain behaviors and fears such as phobias of snakes over more dangerous threats such as guns.

How does evolutionary psychology explain behavior tendencies?

The behavior that promotes success in survival becomes selected over generations.

How were researchers Belyaev & Trot able to produce domesticated foxes?

They selected and mated 5% male & 20% females and eventually new foxes came.

List 3 criticisms of evolutionary psychology.

1- It starts with an effect and works backward to propose an explanation. 2- It is unethical and immoral that men could use such explanations to rationalize their behavior toward women 3- It may overlook the effects of cultural expectations and socialization.

Using trait of aggressiveness list possible psychological components.

A belief that one has to be aggressive to succeed in the world.

Using trait of aggressiveness list possible social components.

Aggressive treatmet from peers.

Discuss 3 influences on individual development according to the biopsychosocial model.

Biological influences- Shared human genome, individual genetic variations, prenatal environment, and sex-related genes, hormones and physiology. Psychological influences- Gene-environment interaction, neurological effect of early experiences, responses evoked by our own personality, gener ect., beliefs, feelings, and expectations. Social-cultural influences- Parental influences, peer influences, cultural attitudes and trends, and cultural gender norms.

Using trait of aggressiveness list possible biological components.

Genetic predispositon to behave agressively.

One man can spread his genes through many females, and is capable of fathering more children at once than a woman can mother/carry.

What is significant about these presumed gender differences in mating preferences?

People believe them to be true and women look for older, mature and settled males for partners, while men looking for younger fertile women for partners.

Why do you think the text author included this section in this module?

So the reader could fully understand the factors behind aggressiveness and similar behaviors so that they may identify it in themselves and others.

How do contemporary scientists feel about Darwin's theory of natural selection?

They admire and use it.

What are the larger implications of Belyaev & Trots study?

When generations of a species are selected for traits, the offspring became fixed to that trait.

What arguments do evolutionary psychologists make that support women's increased interest in partnering & pairing?

Woman have to incubate and nurse one infant at a time and by pairing wisely, a woman increase that odds that her genes will be pass into the future.
