The movement of the verb (or predicate) is modified, usually by repeating the movement. When the movement is modified it indicates that a habit or behavior is continually or regularly done. ex: a person is always punctual repeat the sign for "on time" -facial expressions add meaning to the sign and help convey more specifically the attitude and intention

-in ASL to describe a personal quality, only predictive adjective can be used. This means that the subject is named before signing the adjective. -in english can use either attributive adjectives (i like the friendly dog) or predictive adjectives (the dog is friendly) when describing someone.

-maintaining eye contact while conversing is essential to a culturally successful interaction in ASL

-make a twisting motion with the hand for the dollar number, then give the cent number. there is no need to give the sign for dollar or to touch the forehead with the index finger for cent (teacher does to help us understand )

-name the object before using an instrument classifier (ICL) to show you handled it

-name the room (raise brows) -name furniture or appliance, or part of room (raise brows) -specify location of item (use reference point)

What is oralism?-What effect has it had on the Deaf community over the years?

-oralism is the belief that deaf children should be taught exclusively by lipreading and speech with out the use of sign language. it dates back in the U.S. back to 1867 . it established wide and deep roots in education of Deaf children, after the overwhelming vote to ban sign language from the education od deaf children . Another powerful boost to oralism was when alexander graham bell used his fame and wealth to advocate for speech training, and not sign language as essential to deaf people's personal and professional advancement.

-put the choices in sequence space in front of your body- begin on your non-dominant side

-role shifting is key to successfully describing a situation or illustrating behavior -it allows you to become the person you are describing taking on his or her actions, manner and feelings to further support the opinion given. it gives the listener a better idea of how one came to form such an opinion

How should you utilize spatial agreement in your signing space? What should you do in order to keep things clear throughout your story?

-set up locations in your signing space in a way that resembles the real locations from your experience. Be sure the locations remain constant throughout the story. then have your movement verbs, including classifiers, match the locations.

How do you indicate the cost of something in cents? Make note of the different palm orientations, locations, and movements for all of the different numbers (1-5 cents, 6-9 cents, 10-15 cents etc) how does your teacher sign these?

-the number is incorporated with the sign for cent. the cent sign starts with either the tip of the side of the index finger contacting the forehead and moves outward. -(1-5): handshape for the number is formed at the forehead with the palm facing in and remains the same as the hand moves outward -(6-9): handshape for the number is formed with the palm facing out and remaisn the same as the hand move outward. *for 9 the handshape for the number is modified at the beginning in order for the side of the index finger to contact the forehead. -(10-15): for 10 the "L" shape begins at teh forehead with the palm facing in and ends with the number 10 as the hand moves outward; for 11-15 the tips of the fingers that form the numbers 11-15 touch the forehead -(16-19): "L" handshape begins at the forehead with the palm facing in. Then the hand twists and ends with the palm facing out to form the number 16-19 -(20-25): the "L" shape begins at the forehead with the palm facing out and the hand moves outward to form the number 20-25. for 22 cents the "2" handshape is used at the beginning *teacher uses the cent sign first to show money

When comparing two people, how do you locate each person in space (where do you "place" each one) As you share info about each person, what should you be sure to do?

-when comparing 2 people use contrastive structure. Establish the first person on your non-dominant side and the other person on your dominant side. As you share information about each person, orient your sings and body in the direction where the person you are talking about was established

How are dollar amounts indicated? How are $1-9 different from $10 and above? how does your teacher sign these?

the number is given followed by the sign for dollar. for $1-9 a twisting movement is added to the number and the sign for dollar is not needed -for 10 dollars the number is formed with a single movement and ends with the sign for dollar -teacher signs dollar first to show money
