A word that derives from (or has the same root as) one in another language. Example: The English word "perfect" has the same meaning as the Spanish word "perfecto." In ASL making a licking sign symbolizes eating ice cream.

Explain the difference between an Iconic and Arbitrary sign. Give 1 example of each.
If the sign itself clearly looks like the word or its meaning, it's an iconic sign. The sign for "banana" looks like the signer is peeling a banana. If the sign itself and the word's meaning are not related, it's an arbitrary sign. There's no obvious connection between the sign for "apple" and the fruit itself.

It's not uncommon for many Deaf individuals to arrive late to events appointments, or parties. As a result, an event starts once everyone has arrived.

Explain what the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) does for deaf people.
The ADA provides "equal opportunity" for people with disabilities. For deaf people it requires telephone companies to provide 24/7 telecommunications relay services (TRS) through a third-party communications assistant. Through TRS, deaf and hard of hearing people can communicate via TTYs and voice telephones. The ADA also requires all federally funded public service announcements to have closed captioning.
Explain how you negate a sign in ASL.(Reversal of Orientation for Negation)
There are different ways to negate signs—that is, to change them from a positive to a negative. Sometimes it's shaking your head or wrinkling your nose, and other times it's twisting or rotating your hand. But in some cases you get to throw out the sign—literally. This is called reversal of orientation for negation; essentially extending the sign to perform it backwards as a way to negate it.

With verb agreement, instead of signing several individual words, you sign your subject. Then you use directional movements (up, down, left, right), classifiers, facial expressions, and other NMMs. So, if you're discussing giving money to someone, you would make the sign for the subject (money) and directionally give it to that person
