How was the Catholic church shaping the Art of the Baroque? Include solid explanations with examples to strengthen your answers.
The Catholic church was shaping the Art of the Baroque by commissioning artists to relate more to the people. Instead of showing idealism, artists were encouraged to portray realism so that the viewer could relate to the art in a more tangible way. The church shifted its gears into making religious art seem more relatable by using dramatic lighting and including scenes that were more familiar to the common folk. Because of Protestantism, the church had to find a way to bring faith back to the people and to do that they had to remind everyone that the church represented the purity of God. They made things simple enough for common folk to understand instead of making art that seemed other worldly. Instead of making art that looked heavenly, they made art that depicted religious icons in a familiar and more common place like in Caravaggio's "Calling of St. Matthew".
