Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness

Dose range

- PO: 25-50 mg q6-8 hours max 300 mg/day

Pharmacological action

- antagonize effects of histamine - blocks histamine - effects respiratory system, blood vessels and GI system

- do not exceed recommended dosage - notify MD if persistent dry mouth occurs - patient should avoid alcohol - may cause drowsiness - use sunscreen

Side effects/adverse effects

- drowsiness, dizziness, headache - hypotension, palpitations, dry mouth - urinary retention, chest tightness - N/V/D, decreased secretions - photosensitivity, hearing disturbances - agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia, thrombo- cytopenia

Nursing administration (concerns)

- monitor older adult for confusion/delirium - patients who are lactating - patients with severe liver disease - patients with angle closure glaucoma - patients with hyperthyroidism

Therapeutic uses

- relief from allergy symptoms (seasonal, etc) - treatment for anaphylaxis - relieves dystonic reactions from medications - sleep aid

Medication/food interactions

- risk of CNS depression with other antihistamines - alcohol, opioids, sedative hypnotics - kava kava, valerian, chamomile (can increase CNS depression)
