Distinguish between career values and lifestyle values

Career values are the things that are important to you at your job, including the nature of your work and the details of your work environment. Lifestyle values are the things that are important to you away from work, such as the place where you live, your personal relationships, and the ways you spend your free time

Define intrinsic and extrinsic career values and give examples of each

Intrinsic values are things that are part of the basic nature of your work. Examples include: competition with others, physical risks on the job, opportunities to be creative discovering new knowledge, learning things, public contact, and power or influence over others. Extrinsic values are things that are part of your job,, but do not make up the basic nature of the work. Examples include: dress code; work hours; coworkers, supervisors, and/or clients; opportunities for promotion, and work-related travel

Explain how values affect career choices

Your career choice should fit your values as well as your skills, interests, and personality. Work and lifestyle values help you narrow down career choices new and specific job choices later.

List and describe three major ways to identify career and lifestyle values

1. Examine your pride experience stories for ideas about your values. Use checklists to help you get ideas what to look for. 2. Use self-discovery exercises, in which you create imaginary scenarios or actual pictures to help you clarify your values. 3. Test yourself using online self-assessments.

To identify career values: - Nightmare Job: Picture the worst possible job and use what you do not want to help you figure out what you do value in a career. - Fantasy Workday: Imagine the best possible day at work and identify the qualities that make it so good. - Retirement Party: Imagine what you would like to list as the best parts of your job when you reach the end of your career. To identify lifestyle values: - Worst Ways to Live: Imagine the worst possible living conditions and use what you do not want to help your figure out what you do value in your lifestyle - Picturing Your Ideal Life: Literally create a picture that shows key elements of the lifestyle you desire - One, Five, Ten, Twenty Years From Now: List lifestyle elements you expect/want to have at certain points in your future - When I'm 90: Imagine what you would way were the most important parts of your life when you reach old age
