Cellular Respiration
What is ATP?
It is readily available energy that the body can use.
Where does aerobic respiration (cellular respiration) take place?
In the mitochondria
What is the purpose of cellular respiration?
to break down glucose to release energy (ATP).
What is Glycolysis?
1st step in cellular respiration. Takes place in cytoplasm where glucose is broken down into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid, and 2 ATP are produced.
How many ATP are produced in Anaerobic respiration?
2 ATP (which are what was produced in glycolysis).
What is the Krebs Cycle?
2nd step in aerobic respiration which provides for more breakdown of pyruvic acid to create 2 ATP. Takes place in the mitochondria.
What are the products of aerobic respiration?
36 ATP is produced along with CO2 and H2O that is waste products.
What is the electron transport chain?
3rd step in aerobic respiration where the ETC uses high energy electrons from the Krebs Cycle to convert ADP to ATP. Takes place in mitochondria.
What is lactic acid fermentation?
Occurs in muscle cells. After glycolysis, the pyruvic acid gets broken down into lactic acid. Lactic acid causes a painful, burning sensation in muscles.
What are the reactants and products of Electron Transport Chain?
Reactants - NADH, FADH2, ATP Products - 34 ATP
What organisms perform cellular respiration?
all living organisms
When does cellular respiration occur?
All the time
Equation for Cellular Respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
What is alcohol fermentation?
Occurs in yeast cells. After glycolysis, the pyruvic acid is transformed into carbon dioxide and alcohol as waste products.
What is fermentation?
Process by which cells release energy (ATP) in the absence of oxygen
What is anaerobic respiration?
Process of breaking down glucose to get energy (ATP), without oxygen present.
What is aerobic respiration?
Process of breaking down glucose with oxygen present.
What are the reactants and products of Krebs Cycle?
Reactants - pyruvic acid Products - NADH, FADH2, 2 ATP, CO2
What is the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration?
The products of photosynthesis are the reactants in cellular respiration, and the products of cellular respiration are the reactants in photosynthesis.
What are the two types of Anaerobic respiration?
lactic acid fermentation and alcohol fermentation
