U-shaped kitchen
a kitchen in which the work centers are located on three adjoining walls, in a U shape.
Lavatory
a bathroom sink.
¾ bath
a bathroom that contain a sink, toilet, and shower, but no tub.
Full bath
a bathroom that contains a sink, toilet, and a bathtub or tub/shower combination.
½ bath
a bathroom that contains only a sink and a toilet, with no tub or shower.
Vanity
a cabinet that encloses a sink.
Bidet
a device that looks something like a toilet and is used for personal cleaning.
Split bedroom plan
a house plan in which the master bedroom is separated from the remaining bedrooms.
Straight-line kitchen
a kitchen in which all of the work centers are located on a single wall.
L-shaped kitchen
a kitchen in which the work centers are located on two adjacent walls.
Corridor kitchen
a kitchen in which the work centers are located on two walls opposite each other.
Peninsula kitchen
a kitchen that includes base cabinets and counter areas extending into the room from one of the walls. Peninsulas are often used to separate the kitchen area from a dinning or family room.
Working triangle
a measure of kitchen efficiency that is determined by drawing a line from the front-center of the range to the refrigerator to the sink and back to the range. The sum of these three lines should not exceed 21' in an efficient kitchen
Island kitchen
a modification of a straight line, l-shaped, or u-shaped kitchen that includes a freestanding island. The island may house the sink, cooking center, or food preparation center, and may also serve as an eating area.
Mudroom
a room directly connected to the service entry of a home that provides a place to remove and store muddy or snowy boots, overcoats, and other outdoor gear.
Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)
a safety device that continually monitors the amount of current going to the load and compares it to that coming back. If the amount of current returning to the device is less than that going to the load, the device trips (opens) the circuit to prevent electric shock.
Comfort-height toilet
a toilet that has a seat 17" to 19" from the floor. Comfort-height toilets make access easier for elderly people, disabled people, and other people who have limited mobility.
Overhead doors
another term for garage doors.
Water closet
another term for toilet; often abbreviated WC on floor plans.
Work centers
the three main areas of activity in a kitchen: the food preparation center, cleanup center, and cooking center.
