coercive power

a form of organization power stemming from the authority to withhold rewards or administer punishment.

reward power

a form of organizational power resulting from supervisor authority to provide rewards to staff.

accountability

a supervisor's acceptance of the responsibility that accompanies authority and the need to justify his or her actions to higher level managers in the organization.

What is onboarding?

activities that can begin at the time of employee recruitment and continue until several weeks after orientation;these activities introduce the company and culture and help new employees understand that the organization wants them to succeed.

Bureaucratic Leader

manages by the book. must rely on higher levels of management to resolve problems not in the book. policy officer not proactive.

Democratic = participative

supervisor involves employees as much as possible;they help in decision making process and are delegated much authority.

Power

the ability to influence the behavior of others

Empowerment

the redistribution of power within an organization that enables managers, supervisors, and employees to perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively.. The overall goal of empowerment is to enhance service to guests and increase profits for the organization by releasing decision-making responsibility, authority, and accountability to every level within the organization.

autocratic leadership

leadership style in which the supervisor retains as much power and decision-making authority as possible. Disastrous. Dictator.

Laissez-faire = Free-Rein

Hands off policy. little direction and allows employees extensive levels of freedom.

What are the four leadership styles

1.) Autocratic 2.) Bureaucratic 3.) Democratic 4.) Laissez-faire

position power

Authority granted to a position within the hierarchy of an organization.

Principles of Motivation

Compatibility with objectives Motivational flexibility multi directional force management maturity self motivation effective communications employee participation credit and blame authority conscious self motivation genuine respect.

Expert power

Expert Power - form of personal power stemming from an individual's special knowledge or skill in relation to tasks performed by members of his or her staff. (maintenance person)

Referent power

Referent Power - a form of personal power resulting from the admiration and respect that others have for an individuals personal characteristics. (AGM they train)

There are two different ways to give power through leadership. What are they and describe the subsets of the power for each.
