Chapter 1 what is technology? p2 - 13
Name three types of drawings
Two dimensional drawing three-dimensional drawing freehand drawing
How does a budget help in the design process?
A budget is a planned way of working out the cost of the product that you want to make. The budget includes working out the cost of the materials, equipment and labour. If the product is sold for less than what it cost to make then it is not cost effective.
What is a design brief
A short, clear statement that gives the general outline of the problem to be solved as well as the purpose of the proposed solution.
Describe a manufacturing sequence
A manufacturing sequence is the step-by-step process of what you must do in order for the task to be completed. The manufacturing sequence allows you to work logically.
Where is technology needed and who uses technology?
All people use technology all the time. People use simple everyday items to complicated technical pieces of information. Examples include building, transport, farming, machinery
What are constraints?
Constraints of the things that can limit the work or the solution. For example time, materials, tools, human resources and costs are all constraints.
What is the name of the process used to help us do a technology task?
Design process the design process offers guidelines for doing a technology task
What is designing?
Designing is when you plan and then write your plans and the sketches of your ideas into a design brief. The best ideas are then developed into detailed working drawings. So the first part is the design brief
Name a few making skills Making is the visual realization of the design process.
Drawing detailed designs developing a manufacturing sequence using tools, equipment and materials in a safe way
What do drawings allow us to convey?
Drawings allow us to convey the number of parts that make up an object, the size and shape of those parts, and the way they connect together accurately.
What do drawings do you?
Drawings are used to communicate information about objects
Name different ways to investigate
Finding a solution to a problem producing something to fill someone's need interviewing, questioning and discussing to look for answers gathering data through surveys to get information examining products or photographs carrying out in-depth research from printed or electronic material
What are freehand drawings?
Freehand drawings are drawings made without instruments such as rulers, compasses or with set squares. They are drawn only with a pencil, pen or crayon.
What is an initial idea sketch?
Initial idea sketches are quick freehand drawings that help to clarify your ideas in a drawn form. The drawing often has speech bubbles as if you are talking out loud about what it is that you are making.
Why is investigation an important part of the design process?
Investigation is important because you need to understand a situation before you do something about it.
Name five skills that are required for the design process? These skills show us how a technologist thinks and works. A technologist is constantly thinking and doing, creating ideas and making them real.
Investigation skills design skills making skills evaluation skills communication skills I D M E C a technologist is constantly asking questions and answering them.
What skills do we use to find out what needs to be done?
Investigation skills in order to find out what is to be done investigation means to find out more about something.
What are specifications?
Specifications of the requirements that the solution or product must meet, including safety, materials, function, impact on human rights and effect on the environment
What is technology?
Technology is about finding practical solutions to challenges that face us.
Define technology
The use of knowledge, skills, values and resources to meet people's needs and wants by developing practical solutions to problems, taking social and environmental factors into consideration.
Why are good communications skills important?
These skills allow us to present the technology task in a meaningful way.
What is a three-dimensional drawing?
Three dimensional drawings show all three of the object basic dimensions (height, length and width) on one drawing
There are many different types of technology used in the world of work. True or false
True
What is a two dimensional drawing?
Two-dimensional drawings show two or more views of an object. Each view on a two dimensional drawing shows only two of the objects three basic dimensions.
What do we use evaluation skills for?
We use evaluation skills to test the final product to find out if it meets the original requirements.
Explain the term fitness-for-purpose
When planning a technology task, we need to consider if the product that we are designing will be fit for the purpose for which it is intended.
Name a few design skills
Writing a design brief sketching initial ideas
How do you record your investigation?
You record your investigation by using written notes recordings photographs charts or tables
