John C. Fremont (1846)

Adventurer who played a role in California rebellion against Mexico; later a force in national politics

Treaty of Guadalupe-Hildalgo (1848)

Agreement ending Mexican-American War; ceded vast amount of land to the United States.

Know Nothing Party

Also "Order of the Star-Spangled Banner" or "American Party"; expression of nativism. Typically joined the Whig party.

Wilmont Proviso

Attempt to ban slavery from any territory acquired from Mexico.

Battle of San Jacinto (1836)

Gave Texas its independence from Mexico, although the Mexican government never ratified the treaty that Santa Anna signed. Santa Anna v. Sam Houston battle

Commonwealth v. Hunt (1842)

Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling that labor unions were not illegal monopolies that restrained trade. However, because less than 1% of the work force at that time belonged to a union, their impact was sharply limited. Massachusetts employers in turn brushed aside the court decision and fired union agitators, replacing them with cheap immigrant labor.

Santa Anna (1835)

Mexican dictator who helped provoke Texas Revolution.

Californios

Name of California's Hispanic population who felt little allegiance to Mexico. Some wanted independence from Mexico, whereas other contemplated British or French rule. By the mid-1840s these _____, with their tenuous allegiances, faced a growing number of American settlers with definite political sympathies.

Phrase coined to describe beliefs of ardent expansionists.
