Chapter 3 - Section 4
Express Boyle's law in mathematical terms
(pressure1)(volume1) = (pressure2)(volume2)
Why can the volume of a gas change?
Attraction between gas particles is not strong, so the volume of a gas can be easily changed.
Which law has a curved line when graphed?
Boyle's Law
Which law(s) have a straight line when graphed?
Charles's and Gay-Lussac's
List several properties of gas
Fills its container, easily spreads and mixes with other gasses, has indefinite shape and volume and low density.
State Boyle's law:
For a fixed amount of gas at a constant temperature, the volume of a gas increases as the gas's pressure decreases. Likewise, the volume of a gas decreases as the gas's pressure increases.
Charles's Law
Gas law that demonstrates a decrease in temperature, decrease in volume.
Boyle's Law
Gas law that demonstrates an increase in volume, decrease in pressure
Gay-Lussac's Law
Gas law that shows at constant volume, the pressure of a gas is directly proportional to the temperature.
What two variables are related by Charles' Law?
Temperature and volume
What happens to a balloon if the pressure becomes too great?
The balloon would pop.
What two variables are related by Boyle's law?
Volume and pressure
Gay-Lussac's law relates the temperature of a gas to its..
pressure
Charles' law relates the volume of a gas to its
temperature
A sample of oxygen gas has a volume of 150 mL at a pressure of 0.947 kPa. If the temperature remains constant, what will the volume of the gas be at a pressure of 1.00 kP
142 mL
If the pressure exerted on a 300.0 mL sample of hydrogen gas at constant temperature is increased from 0.500 kPa to 0.750 kPa, what will be the final volume?
200 mL
A flask contains 155 cm3 of hydrgoen at a pressure of 22.5 kPa. Under what pressure would the gas have a volume of 90.0 cm3 at the same temperature?
38.8 kPa
Explain what happens to a fixed sample of gas when its temperature changes.
If temp drops it loses pressure and volume. If temp increases so does pressure and volume.
If pressure in a tire increases what is happening to temperature?
Increasing
What two variables are related by Gay-Lussac's Law?
Pressure and temperature
Compare and contrast the physical properties of solids, liquids and gases.
Solids-fixed molecules, definite shape and volume. Liquids, no definite shape but definite volume, and less bonds between molecules. Gasses- freely moving molecules with no definite shape or volume.
Why do gases have low densities?
gas particles are spread out so much and its mostly empty space
Boyle's law relates pressure of a gas to its
volume
