Chapter 4 Review Questions
How is the skin able to assist in the body's ability to regulate temperature?
By sweating, synthesizes important chemicals, and functions as a sophisticated sense organ.
Besides bone, what other types of tissue are included in the skeletal system?
Cartilage and ligaments( which are made out of fibrous connective tissue)
What is unique about the reproductive system?
It helps the genes survive.
What are some of the differences between the lymphatic and cardiovascular systems?
Instead of containing blood, the lymphatic vessels are filled with lymph. Also, lymph does not circulate.
Name the organs that help rid the body of waste. What type of waste does each organ remove?
Kidneys: clear the body of waste and food stuff in the body cells. Ureters: urine flows through it to the bladder. Bladder: holds urine Urethra: transports urine out of the body.
What is the function of the tendons?
They attach the muscle to the bone
Name three artificial organs or protheses. What do they replace or assist?
artificial hip joint:hip joint insulin infusion device: pancreas dialysis machine: kidney
Give examples of the stimuli to which skin organs can respond
change in temperature, pain, pressure, touch, texture, and vibration
list the 11 organ systems found in this chapter
integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive.
Two functions of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary
integumentary: protection and controlling body temperature. skeletal: protection and support muscular: provides heat to maintain body temperature and controls movement. Lymphatic: movement of fats absorbed from the digestive tract back to the blood and movement of fluids and small particles from tissue around the cells. Respiratory: regulates acid-base balance of the body. It also permitts movement of air to the alveoli. Urinary:clean waste from the body and maintain the electrolyte, water, and acid-base balances of the body.
Define organ and organ system
organ: group of several tissue types that perform a special function. organ system: a group of organs working together to perform a specific function.
