Chapter 6
Changing Lanes
BLANK is a maneuver you use on a road with two or more lanes of traffic moving your direction. Turn blinker on for the direction you are going , check blind spot in same direction, increase speed and move over to your lane and take off blinker
Signaling
BLANK when turning, changing lanes, slowing or stopping. can use hand signals as well as turning BLANK. when using hand signals use right hands to steer
Push-Pull steering
push the steering wheel up with one hand and pull down with the other hand. Do not cross arms with this
parking downhill without a curb
same as downhill with a curb, make sure to have enough space to leave
shared left turn lane
some left turns into businesses can be made mid-block from center lane, can be dangerous, always check front zones before turning
reference point
some part of the outside or inside of vehicle, as viewed from driver's side, that relates to some part of roadway: front, rear or side
hand over hand steering
the driver pulls the steering wheel down with one hand while the other hand crosses over to pull the wheel father down. To complete the turn you continue to pull down with the left hand as you then release the right.
standard reference point
the point of the vehicle that is typical for most drivers EX: center of hood
starting a car on the hill
to get up and go without rolling involves timing and coordination, can use automatic transmission
Steering straight forward
aim far ahead in your intended path of travel, avoid looking down @ hands and feet, have a comfortable and balanced hand
making left and right turns
always check traffic before turning, look for people and oncoming vehicles, plan turns well in advance, be in correct lane a block before turning, need to obey all traffic signs signals and roadways
personal reference point
an adaptation of a standard reference point for one's own vehicle
Backing a stick shift vehicle
can back slowly in stick shift vehicle by carefully controlling your use of clutch pedal @ friction point. push brake and clutch pedal down and shift to reverse, release brake at friction point to back vehicle at a slow controlled pace
deciding which turn about to use
consider legibility of turn about , amount of traffic, types of driveways available. Needs to enter traffic lanes forward or back.
understeering
do not turn the steering wheel enough to keep car in planned path, you will continue too far in one direction before can correct and steer towards the target
pulling into driveway on right side
high risk maneuver, avoid whenever possible, same steps as going on left side but going to opposite way
pulling into driveway on left side
if oncoming traffic is light and a driveway is available on the left ( steps in notebook), enter driveway then back out and reverse ot go onto other side of street
slowing or stopping hand signal
left arm, extended downward
left turn hand signal
left arm, hand extended straight out
right turn hand signal
left arm, hand pointing up
backing into driveway on right side
lets you re-enter traffic going forward ( steps in notebook)
mid-block U-turn
make sure this is legal in your state, it is a risky move 1) check traffic ahead and to rear, then signal right and go to far right 2) signal left and toward the left 3) check your front and left rear zones and blind spots. Turn sharply left while moving slowly to center of two lanes 4)move slowly until vehicle is going straight on opposite side of street
turn about
maneuver for turning your vehicle around to go in the opposite direction
Steering straight forward
may feel strange to new drivers, involves where to look and how to control direction and speed. Back up by using passenger seat to look back through rear window and back up
parking uphill without curb
pull as far away from road as can-park when leaving let vehicle creep backwards
precautions w/ turnabouts
-make sure laws permit this -select a side w/ 500 feet of visibility in each direction - don;t make BLANK near hills, curves or w/in 200 feet of intersection- never attempt BLANK in heavy or high speed traffic
parking on hill
-make sure vehicle will not role down the hill -always turn front wheels and set parking brake to prevent from rolling - parking on a hill steps apply to right side so need to adjust for left side
Parking
-try to find a parking space w/ ample room for entering and exiting - avoid spaces @ end of parking lanes and near a large vehicle -avoid spaces w poorly parked vehicles on either side -use reference points when executing parking maneuvers
oversteering
turning the steering wheel too much, makes the vehicle swerve from side to side
parking uphill with curb
use reference points to pull to curb safely then go to neutral and then park
perpendicular parking
use to park your vehicle at a right angle to the curb
angle parking
use to park your vehicle diagonally to curb, used in parking lots and shopping centers
parallel parking
use to park your vehicle parallel to the curb, select a space 5-6 feet longer than your vehicle, front of vehicle will swing far to left, check over left shoulder to be sure this space is clear ( step sin notebook)
parking downhill with a curb
vehicle close to curb and stop. let vehicle creep forward a little, park when leaving, back a little to straight wheels
3-point turn about
very hazardous as stopping the vehicle and then turning,( steps in notebook)
leaving an angle or perpendicular space
view is often blocked as begin to back into moving traffic. Back slowly look to rear and sides as you search for other roadway users and people
backing left and right
visual search will be over left shoulder and through left side windows for backing left and over right shoulder and through right side windows for backing right, use hand over hand steering and follow the steps
leaving a parallel parking space
you are responsible for avoiding a collision when leaving a parallel parking space, yield to traffic ( steps in notebook)
