Chapter 7: Basic Life Support
What are the steps in the three-person log roll?
(Step 1: Person 1: Kneel above the patient's head and keep their head stabilized. Person 2: Kneel at the patient's waist and straighten both of their legs and arms. Have the arm, nearest to person 2, lifted above the patient's head and have the other arm palm up beside them. Person 3: Kneel at the patient's knees. Step 2: Person 1: Have hands position in anticipation of rotation. Person 2: Put a hand on the shoulder and wrist farthest away from person 2. Person 3: Put hands holding the hips and ankles furthest away from person 3. Step 3: Person 1: Countdown to begin the log roll. Person 2 and 3: Slowly roll the patient to the opposite direction of the initial head position. Step 4: Person 1: Stabilize and maintain the patient's rotating torso. Person 1,2 and 3: Continue the log roll until the patient is facing upwards.)
What are the steps in AED?
(Step 1: Do CPR. 30 compressions and 2 breaths. Step 2: Turn the AED on and make sure the chest is bare. Step 3: Then attach the electrode pads to the patient. One pad on the right clavicle and beside the patient's sternum. The other pad on the left side of the ribs and a few inches below the armpit. Step 4: The AED will automatically analyze a patient's heart rhythm. Step 5: It will alert to shock or not. Step 6: Resume back to CPR if it does need a shock. Stand clear if it did advise a shock. Step 7: Resume back to CPR once shock is given. Step 8: Continue until the voice instructions says to stop, the patient moves, or it says otherwise.)
Fill in the Blank(s): After ________ to ________ minutes without a(n) ________ or ________, the brain does not receive the oxygen it needs, and the brain cells begin to die.
4/6/pulse/respirations
Define: Circulation, Airway, Breathing (CAB)
CPR's first steps
What is the importance of early access to AED?
Early access improves survival rate.
TRUE/FALSE If a spinal injury is suspected, the patient must remain face-down.
False
TRUE/FALSE If you must begin ventilating for a patient without a mask, obtain a mask as soon as you can.
False
TRUE/FALSE If you recognize full arrest and begin CPR an hour later, you can save the patient from biological death.
False
TRUE/FALSE To get food or another substance out of a patient's throat, you can just press on the stomach and the food or other substance will most likely come out.
False
TRUE/FALSE Trainers and student trainers do not have to be certified in CPR.
False
How many compressions and breaths need to be given during CPR?
Give 30 compression and 2 rescue breaths.
What maneuver is used when the airway is obstructed?
Head-Tilt, Chin-Lift
How do you do the Head-Tilt, Chin-Lift?
One hand on the patient's forehead and the fingertips of the other hand under the chin. (Tilt the head back and lift the chin up.)
Put the steps of giving basic life support in order. - Use the cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedure by using the combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions. - Clear an obstructed airway by using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. - Lastly use the automated external defibrillator as soon as possible.
Step 1: Clear an obstructed airway by using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. Step 2: Use the cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedure by using the combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions. Step 3: Lastly use the automated external defibrillator as soon as possible.
What is the purpose of basic life support?
Treating and recognizing breathing difficulties and cardiac arrest.
TRUE/FALSE A person who is choking usually grabs the throat.
True
TRUE/FALSE In the log roll, as long as you are able to roll the patient over, you have no chance of getting hurt.
True
TRUE/FALSE The best and safest method of opening a child's or adult's airway when a spine injury is not present or suspected is the head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver.
True
When do you do CPR on a patient?
When the patient is unresponsive and not breathing.
Define: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
a lifesaving procedure combining rescue breathing and chest breathing
Define: Head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver
a procedure for opening a blocked airway (a patients head is tilted back and the chin is lifted)
Define: Chain of Survival
a sequence of actions that reduces the mortality rate of cardiac arrest
Define: Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
a small, portable device that analyzes the heart rhythm, alerts the rescuer, and provides the necessary shock
Define: Cardiac arrest
absence of heartbeat
Fill in the Blank(s): AED stands for ________ _________ ________.
automated external defibrillator
Fill in the Blank(s): When the brain cells die, it is called ________ ________.
biological death
Define: Xiphoid process
bony tip of the sternum
Fill in the Blank(s): The absence of a heartbeat is called ________ _______.
cardiac arrest
Define: Back of tongue
epiglottis
Define: Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)
heartbeat stops beating suddenly (can cause death)
Define: Good Samaritan Laws
legal protection for people who give reasonable assistance to the injured, ill, peril, or incapacitated
Define: Supine
lying on the back
Define: Log roll
procedure used to turn a patient over
Define: Obstructed airway maneuver
quick upward thrust against a patient's abdomen (removes obstructions and an open airway from the mouth/nose to the lungs)
Define: Chest Compressions
repeated and controlled pressure in the sternum of a cardiac arrest victim (allows oxygen to move throughout the body)
Fill in the Blank(s): When both ________ and ________ cease, the patient experiences clinical death.
respirations/pulse
Define: Trachea
windpipe
