Chapter 75 & 76 term
Differential
A device that allows the rear wheel to rotate at different speed as the vehicle goes around corners
Banjo housing
A differential housing without the third member called because is resembles a two sided banjo
Pitch line
A line that runs through the center of the tooth from heel to toe
Howl
A noise like the wind across the top of a soda bottle. Its range is 120-300 hertz
Gear pattern
A pattern taken off of the ring gear teeth from a coating of colored paste painted on the gear teeth
Pumpkin
A removable differential Third memer
Spider gear
A side gear in the differential pinion
Driveline
A term that describes the part that transfer power from the transmission to the rear wheels
Constant velocity universal joint
A u-joint whose output speed is constant like its input speed
AWD
All wheel drive, when all for wheels are driven
Locking hubs
Allows a four wheel drive vehicle to be used in two wheel drive with the out the axles and differential being attached to the front wheels
Cross and yoke universal joint
Also called a cardan, most popular u joint design
Halfshaft
Also called axle shaft it is a drive axle on a fwd vehicle
Salisbury axle
Also called integral its third member is not removable as a unit
Flank
Also called the root. The part of a gear tooth that is the area below the pitch line
Face
Also called the top. The area of a gear tooth above the pitch line
Live axles
An axle that turns with the wheels
Swing axle
An axle with a u-joint at one or both ends
Hotchkiss drive
An open driveshaft.
Coast
Deceleration, power is on the concave side of the gear tooth
EP addictive
Extreme pressure additive added to lubricant to prevent welding between metal surfaces
Limited slip differential
It locks up the spider gears when one wheel start to lose traction
Breakaway torque
The amount of torque needed to the side gear rotate the clutches in a limited slip differential
Cruise
The car is maintaining its speed
Coast side
The concave side of the gear tooth
Drive side
The convex side of the gear tooth
Third memeber
The differential is called this. The engine is the first and the transmission is the second
Toe
The inner end of the gear tooth
Heel
The outer end of the gear tooth
Float
Vehicle speed is slowly dropping
Galling
Wet caused by metal to metal contact in the absences of adequate lubrication. Metal is transferred from one surface to the other
Hunting gearset
When a pinion gear tooth will move around until it contacts all of the ring gear teeth
Partial non-hunting gearset
When one pinion tooth contacts two or three different ring gear teeth during one revolution and two or three different ones the next revolution
Non hunting gearset
When one tooth on the pinion gear will wish with the same tooth on the ring gear again and again rather than hunting for all of the rest of the teeth
Drive shaft phase
When trunnions of the front and rear u joint are in the same plane
Drive
When under acceleration power is on the convex side of the gear tooth
